Trends and Factors . . .
Trends are when there is either a growth or decrease in the industry and is when something is currently happening whereas factors are somthing bad that has happened in the past.
Trends-
Increased frequency of holidays- P5 M2
Many people use to only go on one holiday per year and this would be abroad. Usually any other holidays that they took throughout the year would usually be domestic holidays for either a short break or visiting family. But over the last few years holidays have become a lot more popular and very easy to book and sort out, therefore more people are going away on holidays frequently. Domestic holidays have also become more popular due to people only wanting short breaks away. Today’s society has better working conditions which means that tourist are able to take more holidays away and more short breaks with the family. Something else that has changed over the years is electrical appliances at home. As the generation is getting more technical chores like washing, cook and drying clothes has become a lot easier. Appliances such as washing machines, dryers and microwaves can save families more time to go on leisure holidays.
More Independent Travellers-
This generation travelling independently has become increasingly popular. This is because people have become more confident with travelling alone and it has also become very simple because of all the different technology and signs that are placed all around the airports. Most people used to book holidays with travel agents and book package holidays but now because of technology it has become more popular to book online and building holidays they want by booking flights, accommodation and ancillary on different websites which can work out cheaper. In a recent survey carried out by ITW, nearly half of people they surveyed considered themselves to be independent travellers. (44%). People are deciding to travel independently because on the TV and the Media make traveling overseas independently more attractive.
Increase in holiday home ownership-
Holiday home ownership in the UK has become increasingly popular since the recession with more and more people taking regular breaks within the UK. In 2009 the number of holiday homes that are now owner in Britain has increased by 2.6%. It is also expected to be increase another 2% in 2012. In the coming years, it is predicted that there will be an increase of overseas visitors to Britain and with people purchasing holiday home more often they are likely to stay over for a short break away. It’s not just families that decide to purchase these holiday homes, but also couples that like to get away for a few days and single people who are looking for a second home that they can go to that offers an affordable price. Having a holiday home takes away the stress of air fares, transfers, exchange rates and foreign languages. This has a positive effect on tourism for the UK as more people are coming to the UK and using our facilities and spending their money which is the multiplier effect.
Factors-
Cost of travel-
The cost of travel can change throughout sessons usually June-August are the dearest months of travelling abroad because of the summer holidays while people are off work and out of education. When booking a last miniute holiday it can work out a lot cheaper than booking in advance, booking last minuite can save hundreds of pounds. Most people think the cost of air travel should rise to an extent that it deters people from flying and to pay developing countries for the damage it does to the

Recession-
Recession can make customers suspicious about spending their money on leisure activities and travelling. People take fewer holidays and short breaks during the year and they will look for better packages that can save them money. The negative effect on tourism would be that people are now not spending their money on leisure and holidays because people are spending their hard earned money on things such as food and drinks, bills and keeping a roof over their family’s head, therefore the money isn’t being spent on additional causes. Since recession, the travel and tourism industry have lost out on a lot of money because people are just staying local for their short breaks or visiting VFR to save their money for the more important things.
Terrorism-
The 9/11 attack that happened in New York in 2001 immediately had a negative effect on both inbound and outbound tourism and obviously a traumatic time for families and friends. The attack has this negative impact because people were afraid of flying just in case something like this was to happen again. People also were afraid of bombs and other terrorist and families wanted to stay home so nothing like this happened to them and their families. It has also had a negative effect on tourism because countries were loosing out on money because people weren’t travelling overseas. But it has also had a positive effect because since this attack, airports have now got fully trained security guards and have also been made more thorough and it takes longer to get through security, this means that people feel a lot safer flying.
